GOTS: A Means for Sustainable Textiles

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is an international standard for organic fibers, including both natural and processed materials. The standard is intended to define the requirements for organic textile production, including aspects such as crop management, waste water treatment, and worker health and safety.

To be GOTS certified, textiles must meet certain requirements for organic fiber content, chemical inputs, dyeing and finishing processes, and manufacturing and labeling practices. The standard also includes provisions for inspection and certification, as well as a traceability system that allows tracking of organic fibers from the farm to the final product.
It is a widely recognized standard for organic textile manufacturing.
This label is widely recognized and trusted for its environmental and ethical integrity, by the consumers.

GOTS Certification Process

The process of getting GOTS certification for a textile product involves the following steps:

Initial assessment: The applicant must first perform an initial assessment of their textile production process to ensure that they meet the basic requirements of the GOTS standard.

Application: Next, the applicant must submit an application for certification, which includes providing detailed information about their production process and supply chain, as well as a description of the product(s) that they want to certify.

Inspection: The applicant's production facility and supply chain must then be inspected by an independent, third-party certification body. The inspection will verify that the applicant's production process and supply chain meet the requirements of the GOTS standard.

Certification: If the inspection is successful, the certification body will issue a certificate of compliance to the applicant, which is valid for a period of three years. The applicant can then use the GOTS label on their certified products.

Surveillance audits: After certification, the applicant's production facility and supply chain will be subject to ongoing surveillance audits to ensure that they continue to meet the requirements of the GOTS standard.

It is important to note that the whole process of certification is quite detailed, and can be time-consuming. It also requires a good understanding of the standard and related regulations.

Furthermore, the cost of certification varies based on the certification body and the size of the facility, but it is not usually inexpensive. And the certifying body will have to be licensed and authorized by GOTS to certify the facility.
